Africa Cup of Nations : attack on Togo team bus.

For my first 2010 post I would like to talk about Togo football team’s bus attack on January 8, 2010. The team was attacked by gunmen as its bus made its way from a training camp in the Republic of Congo to the venue in Cabinda City to compete in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. As a result of this tragedy a faction of the Cabinda separatist rebel group, Front for the Liberation of the State of Cabinda (Flec), has claimed responsibility for the 30 minute machine gun attack. They are a small, fragmented insurgent group who deny Angola’s right to govern the province and want to obtain their independence. The group has been fighting since the 1960s.

The attack was not directed against the Togo bus, it was against Angolan forces. Despite the death tool is sad : the Angolan driver, the coach assistant and the responsable of communication were killed. The goalkeeper and the central defencer were hurt.

To my mind this storie is unacceptable. I think that it is important to find very quickly a peace agreement between Angola’s government and a faction of the separatist Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda to avoid futurs innocent attacks. It’s really sad for the Togo team and this kind of thing should never happen. In addition confusion continued to reign Friday as to whether Togo will take part in the Africa Cup of Nations.
